Confidential Mission Impressions
Light guns are for kids! - by digitaltaco

It's been awhile since we've seen a new title in the Virtua Cop series. And unless you picked up Sega Smash Pack Volume 1, it's likely that you haven't played a Virtua Cop game in quite awhile. That's where Confidential Mission comes in. The semi-sequel to Virtua Cop 2 was playable at E3. Read on to find out about what you can expect.

The playable version of Confidential Mission suffered from one major fault at the start; it was only available for play with the standard Dreamcast controller and not with a light gun. This is probably due to the fact that Sega never produced a light gun for the American market. As such, the gameplay was hindered due to my inability to move the crosshair around with an analog stick. So when you actually get to play this game with a light gun, you can expect it to be much better.

If you played any Virtua Cop 2 in the past, you know what to expect. Evil dudes with guns pop out from behind corners, boxes and from out of doors and try to shoot you. A large target forms around the enemy so you know what you're supposed to be shooting. Also, there are the standard non-evil civilians around that you are not supposed to shoot. Add in the usual gun power-ups, and you've basically got VC2. The main difference that I noticed, other than the story, was that there are now briefcases that you can shoot. Inside are conifdentail materials that you take back to base. They just equal more points for you!

The best part of the game is the two player mode. Mr. Domino and I went to town in the train level and it was a blast. Although, Domino does seem to like shooting the civilians a bit too much. And once I figured out that the reload button was "B" and not "R," the game was a lot more fun. Do remember, of course, that you'll probably want a light gun if you plan to play this for any extended period of time.

With the only real light gun games available on the Dreamcast now being House of the Dead 2 and Virtua Cop 2 on the Sega Smash Pack, it'll be refreshing to get your hands on something new. Look for Confidential Mission in stores now!
