So, the game plays well, but how long before it loses its appeal? And will you still pick it up as a single player game a month or so after buying it?
Virtua Striker 2
SWWS Euro Edition |
Virtua Striker 2's single player options are limited. There's an arcade mode where you progress through the World Cup, but there are few rewards for doing so. There is also a goal score rating system and the ability to save your best goals onto the VMU, but these are not enough to keep you entertained for more than a short amount of time. The games multiplayer is where the main enjoyment is to be had, and the fast and furious arcade-style football makes for multiplayer matches which are as exciting to watch as they are to play. Despite initial control grievances, most people will enjoy playing this as a competitive multiplayer title after some practice has been put in. As with all AM2 arcade titles, theres enough scope to allow mastery of the title, either through a fantastic goal scoring technique or through great defence.
Sega Worldwide Soccer 2K (and Euro Edition)
Sega Worldwide Soccer features more single player modes than Virtua Striker 2, but these arent proper challenges. They seem more like many matches played consecutively, and arent very involving at all. One look at Virtua Tenniss World Circuit confirms how a single player sports game mission should work, addictive to return to with incentive bonuses for the skilled player to unlock. The Euro Edition has a noticeably better multiplayer mode, but the average amusement factor coupled with the poor loading times will put you off returning to this title on a frequent basis.
Uefa Striker |
UEFA Striker / Striker Pro 2000
UEFA Striker has the best single player experience of the lot with a polished and rewarding championship mode. There are rewards for completing this mode too, in the form of national team selection and the ability to play certain "classic matches" from yesteryear. The game's multiplayer mode can be addictive, although the attainment of mastery isnt quite as appealing as in Virtua Striker 2 (as was said in the gameplay section, scoring goals just isnt quite as satisfying in UEFA Striker). If the game had some sort of goal rating system and a save system a la Virtua Striker 2, it might have improved the addictive qualities of the title a bit. Despite this, its still got the best longetivity and most realistic gameplay of the bunch.
