World Series Baseball 2K2
Ball flies in right field and... the player picks up the controller! - by Mr. Domino

Of all the sports games Sega debuted at E3, none are as impressive or necessary as Sega Sports' World Series Baseball 2K2. WSB2K1 was a travesty of a baseball game with both a shoddy season mode and a complete and utter lack of fielding control. Sure, the batting and pitching game were shiny and playable, but it alone could not save WSB2K1 and make it a worthy choice for baseball nuts such as Bill and Tim.

Although WSB2K2 will unfortunately not be able to capitalize on baseball season yet again with its late fall/winter release date, the game will be worth the wait. The graphics are smoother and the models and stadiums are more convincing than last season's game. The presentation looks top notch, with the camera being attractive yet practical and the pace quick yet dramatic.

The most obvious improvement is the ability to control the fielders on defense, which was the Archilles' heel of the first game. Although, the game will no longer use that dated and terrible Genesis announcer, which is sure to keep the ear blood safely in the ear where it belongs. Sega's bringing on Ted Robinson, the voice of the San Francisco Giants, to do play by play commentary and add to the game's realistic atmosphere.

WSB2K2 includes an extensive player creation mode, and Sega even brags about the amount of accessories you can use to help customize your player, from sunglasses to elbow protectors and shin guards. If you're not feeling particularly imaginative, you can also just trade existing players and sign on free agents to help improve your favorite team. WSB2K2 will of course include an updated roster based on the official MLB 2001 roster along with all the teams and stadiums any real baseball game should have.

While you can play seasons and enjoy the fantasy draft until your heart's content, you'll probably enjoy the all new on-line mode even more. WSB2K2's on-line mode will give you a chance to belittle your opponents through the chat interface for those times a local human is unavailable. For the single gamer, married or not, you can enjoy the game's four other fun modes of play: exhibition, season, playoffs, and home run derby.

You can organize your team any way you want with complete control over the batting order, starting roster, and more. Of course, you'll want to manage your team successfully to avoid injuries. Depending on the severity of the injury, a player could be knocked out for several games, so it's important to play wisely.

WSB2K2 looks to be everything a baseball fan could want in a game. It's pitching and batting interface is second to none, and the host of new additions and improvements are sure the cement the series new position at the head of the pack.
