Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves 2D fighting goodness from SNK and Agetec - Review By Andrei Alupului - Page 2/2
The Bad
There really isnt too much to be said here. Just small little aggravations really. For example, they decided to throw in a Practice mode, a feature that all fighting games should have, yet they overlooked including a moves list in this mode. Theyre still in the instruction booklet, so you can use that as a reference, but its still a little bit annoying. Not a big fault, but annoying nonetheless. Also, why are the hidden boss characters available from the very start of the game? Theres no satisfaction in simply having them unlocked for you to use from the very beginning.
The port really is arcade-perfect in every way imaginable. This includes every single translation and spelling error there was in the original Neo-Geo version and every single piece of out there dialogue. Now, this can be both a good and bad thing, but I figure most people wont dig the low quality dialogue, unless they have a love for all things so bad its funny. Personally, I was pleased with it simply because I remembered playing the arcade version of the game and seeing those same things, and finally playing it on a TV in my home was a big thrill for me. This is admittedly very nerdy.
The one thing that I always wondered about MOTW was, what exactly is the plot? I cant seem to figure it out. Yeah, ok, theres a tournament everyone wants to win it, but there seem to be a lot of references to past Fatal Fury games. You dont need to be familiar with the past FF games to enjoy MOTW, I wasnt, but I suppose that if you want to fully follow the plot and understand some of the stuff going on, specifically with Terry and Rock, you may want to have some past experience with them. Its not exactly that important to a fighting game to know what the plot is anyway.
The Final Word
Its too bad that the Dreamcast is going off to that console gaming rec room in the sky, but at least its leaving some quality games in its wake. MOTW is one of the best fighters you can get for the DC. Its also one of the best 2D fighters ever made. Theres really no reason for you to not go out and pick it up. If you like fighting games, even if you dont, chances are youll like this.
Its got everything you could want: nice graphics, spot on control, solid play mechanics, and its loads of fun to play. Its nice to have a fighting game that requires some real strategy. Its a welcome change from the current trend of button masher fighting games that Capcoms Vs. series has spawned. If youre looking for a fun new game to play on your Dreamcast, you need not look further than Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves.
