There are 56 total characters in the game, over half of which are hidden. It'll be a while before anyone breaks that record, methinks.
The Japanese version actually requires you to take your VMU to the arcades and earn points there to unlock secret characters. Needless to say, this made it very annoying for import gamers to get all the characters, so clever people have hacked the save file for easy character unlocking.
